Mikado entrance
1 / 2
Mikado is an intimate Japanese restaurant occupying a narrow shophouse in downtown Shanghai. The design draws inspiration from traditional machiya architecture, creating a sequence of spaces that unfold as guests move deeper into the building.
A central lightwell brings natural light into the heart of the plan, illuminating a small moss garden visible from the main dining room.
Materials include charred timber, handmade ceramic tiles, and washi paper screens, establishing an atmosphere of refined simplicity.
